Ellen Tkacsik and Salvador Perform at Block Party
After an afternoon of excursions and entertainment, CHIC-goers gathered at The Hub for the first Block Party Monday night. Ellen Tkacsik, a finalist in the Battle of the Bands, opened the Block Party performing a song she had written earlier this summer. A roar erupted from the crowd as she ended her song. Tkacsik said that in writing this song she was able to share a piece of her life story. Reflecting back on a time of hardship in her life, Tkacsik shared, “I’ve learned that God is my Father.”
Salvador, a Latin jam band, was next on stage for their third consecutive appearance at CHIC. In an interview after their performance, band member Nicolas Gonzales said, “As a band there are shows that are staples in your year. We’ve done this before and I have told people this is one of the finest conferences. When you get invited back, it’s a true honor.” When asked how his personal life is reflected in his music, Gonzales said, “For every writer it’s something different. What you put in a poem or a song you can say mushier things than you do on an everyday basis.” He compared songwriting to praying with his one and a half year-old son, Zeland. It is a chance to talk to God more as a child and tell Him how much I love Him, Gonzales said.
The Block Party takes place every evening from 6-8 p.m. Students can listen to music, play outdoor games, eat snacks, paint on The Wall and relax before heading into Main Stage
