Sudanese School Escapes Serious Damage
The following article appears on the Covenant Web Site:
BENTIU, SUDAN (September 24, 2007) – A school building under construction – thanks to more than $100,000 raised by teenagers at last year’s CHIC event – withstood the flooding that has devastated much of this African nation, says Jim Sundholm, director of Covenant World Mission.
“The flooding washed away some of the sand and cement, but what was built stayed firm,” says Jim Sundholm.
Construction has been delayed due to the loss of the building materials, but Sundholm hopes work will resume soon. The accompanying photograph [see below] is from May and the most recent available. Since the time of the photograph and prior to the flooding, construction continued, including the addition the school’s roof.
Record flooding from torrential rains that began in June has left millions at risk for disease and uprooted thousands of families.
Covenant World Relief has established a special fund to help flood victims, with donations accepted by mail as well as online. To learn more, please see Sudan Flood Relief.

Bentiu Update
At CHIC 2006 youth were invited to share their gifts with the people of Bentiu, a village in central Sudan. The students collected more than $100,000 to begin a food program, build a medical clinic and a new school. As of spring 2007, the four main classrooms, a brick and metal roof, and a traditional kitchen have been built. The toilets have also been installed.
“Excitement for the students is at an all time high as the school comes together. They have great anticipation and are very anxious for this project to be completed. It is important to realize that the Sudan has the lowest percentage of girls attending school in the world. However, at Good Hope School in Bentiu, the percentage of females in school is now 43%.”
